Saint Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 and devoted his early years to prayer and the study of
Scripture. His life changed when he was inspired by the witness of Franciscan missionaries martyred in Morocco
— he joined the Franciscan Order and God redirected his path toward preaching. He became one of the greatest
preachers in Church history, drawing crowds of thousands with his profound knowledge and powerful calls to
conversion. Known for his tender devotion to the infant Jesus and his love for the poor, Anthony died on June
13, 1231, at just thirty-five years old — and was canonized less than a year later.
Saint Anthony teaches us the virtues of faith, persistence, and trusting God’s plan.
